The Chinese exclusion act placed a ban on immigrants from China. further restrictions came for people that were deemed undesirable like criminals, convicts, and those who are mentally incompetent. Immigrants had to go through medical examinations and pay a tax when entering the United States at Ellis Island. the efforts to limit immigration were supported by groups such as labor unions they feared employers would use immigrants to break strikes, a nativist society, and social Darwinists that viewed immigrants as biologically inferior. Immigrants became the scapegoat for jobless workers and for employers who blame strikes and the labor movement for foreign protesters.
