Awakening of Reform: Settlement houses: Hull House, Jane Addams (SOC, WXT) (17 Dez 1890 Jahr – 17 Dez 1900 Jahr)

Beschreibung:

In an attempt to understand the needs of the low-class citizens of America, a group of young middle-class men and women settled into immigrant neighborhoods. These middle-class citizens lived in settlement houses where they would provide social services to the families of working class and immigrants. For example, the Hull House, started by Jane Addams, taught English to immigrants, developed an early childhood education, taught industrial arts, and constructed theaters and music schools. The Hull House became the foundation for the 400 other settlement houses that appeared across America. The people who worked in settlement houses were volunteers who advocated for child-labor laws, housing reforms, and women’s rights. Settlement houses made it easier for immigrants to assimilate to life in America and provide their children with better opportunities.
