After WWII many countries toppled their colonial governments and the U.S., in keeping with the NSC-68, used the CIA to topple many newly formed governments that were pro communist. For example, when the prime minister of Iran nationalized oil corporations, the CIA organized a coup that ousted him and put in the pro American shah. Also, when the elected leader of Guatemala seized land owned by the United Fruit Company, the CIA again organized another successful coup and put in place a pro U.S. government that returned the land to the United Fruit company and protected the Panama Canal. Therefore, the U.S. increased its role as the world's police man and intervened in any developing nation that was deemed sympathetic to communism or a threat to a u.S. economic interest.
