Mollie McGuires (1 Jan 1861 Jahr – 1 Jan 1875 Jahr)
Beschreibung:
This was a secret society of Irish immigrants that was blamed for violent assaults, and arsons in Pennsylvania. As immigrants in the U.S. they were forced to accept the most physically demanding mining jobs and were forced to live in overcrowded company owned housing. During and after the civil war "coffin notices" that threatened death were delivered to mining supervisors and workers that replaced them when they were on strike. These coffin notices were believed to be written by the Mollie McGuires. Twenty four supervisors were assassinated and the President of the Reading Railroad hired the Pinkerton Detective Agency to infiltrate and destroy the Mollie McGuires. Based only on the testimony of the Pinkerton undercover agent 20 men were sentenced to death. Today this trial and the executions are seen as unjust. The significance of this group is that it was an early example of organized strikes for better working conditions and the violence that was often associated with labor conflicts between workers and employers.
