The Social Gospel Movement (1 Jan 1870 Jahr – 1 Jan 1920 Jahr)

Beschreibung:

During this period, the United States was becoming more of an urban nation, as immigrants increasingly moved into American cities. However, many rural white Americans and African Americans also moved to cities during this industrialization period in search of employment. The middle and upper classes moved out of the cities in favor of suburbs, as the working poor moved in. Cities were overcrowded and impoverished immigrant families were forced to live in tenements. Religiously motivated people were inspired to help the immigrant populations in cities and this desire led to the Social Gospel movement, which was led by Protestant ministers that advocated for the application of Christian teachings to social and economic problems. The significance of this movement, is that it highlighted that the best intentions of religious or charitable organizations are not enough to help with serious social problems, and ultimately state and federal governments will need to intervene. This in fact is what happened after the Great Depression.
