Description: Nikita Khrushchev launched political reform at the 20th Party Congress that condemned the crimes committed by his predecessor, Joseph Stalin, destroyed Stalin’s image as a perfect leader.
Significance: This shocked communists throughout the world—who had been taught to admire Stalin—damaged the prestige of the Soviet Union, and generated serious friction in the international communist movement. Also "thawed" government control and led to the release of political prisoners.
