Description: While the allies were discussing Germany's partition after WWII, they agreed to divide Berlin into four allied occupation zones. The Soviets, who wanted entire control over Germany for themselves, opposed these plans and established a blockade to prevent supplies from being moved into the western sections. To avoid a military conflict, the allies began supplying the city via planes until the Soviets lifted the blockade.
Significance: This event was the first major cold war conflict, and it was also a great victory for the US. It would act as a precursor for the two Germanys and the division between East and West Europe.
