After Hitler ordered troops to push on Russia and months of back-and-forth warfare ensued, Volga and Stalingrad were the Axis's main targets, however, Russia built strong defensive lines and surrounded Stalingrad after the Germans had pushed in, killing well over 300,000 German soldiers. Significant people in this event include Fedor Von Bock, Field Marshal for the German attack, and Marshal Semyon Timoshenko, in charge of the Russian attack.
