In 1815, Britain took control over southern Africa from the Dutch rule. Dutch settlers or Boers, were angered by this and resisted assimilation by the British and moved father north and set up their own states. In the 1890s, gold was discovered within the territory of the Boers. This lead to a large amount of people into the area, including many members of the British colonies to the south. WIth the new residents coming tensions rose between the two colonies. In October of 1899, the Boers attacke the British forces and the Boer or South African War began.
As the war continued, British asked for Canada to join the war, as they needed allies. Many Canadians that supported British Imperialism demanded that troops were to be sent over, while French Canadians and recent immigrants were not to keen. They believed that the war had nothing to do with Canada and opted to stay out of the quarrel. By the imperialists, the war was seen as an opportunity to unify colonies accros the British Empire and propmote military cooperation against its enemies.
The government was divided over the issue too, as some of the members of Parliament were imperialists whereas others were French Canadian anti-imperialists. As a compromise, Priminister Sir Wilfred Laurier announced that he would only send willing volunteers to fight in the war. Sadly, this did not satify either party as imperialists viewed this as weak support for the British Empire and anti-imperialists did not want any troops to be sent to war.
More than 7000 people volunteered, and were soon shipped to southern Africa where they woud be under the control of the British army. As the war raged on, the ati war sentient increased as the number of casualties rose and by the end of the war in 1902, 60 000 people had died including 270 Canadians. Close to 26 000 Boer women and children died and others were forced to live in British-guarded concentration camps. The dreadful conditions and neglet suffered in the camps brought on worldwide criticism of Britain and British imperialist.
