The Battle of Manassas, marked the first major land battle of the American Civil War. The union was led by General Ulysses S. Grant and a couple others with about 35,000 union men. They were pursuing the Confederate army of 20,000 and their general Robert E. Lee along a small river called the bull run. The FIght contained a general on the confederate side called Thomas Jonathan Jackson, this bloody battle ended in a confederate victory and because of Jonathan Jackson's efforts in flanking the union, he received the name Stonewall Jackson, which became an ongoing threat throughout the battles. The casualties were about 22,000 from both sides combined
