As VP to President William McKinley, when he was assassinated in September 1901, Theodore Roosevelt became the 26th president of the United States. Roosevelt accomplished many things during his presidency. For example, he confronted the struggle between management and labor head-on bringing strenuous efforts to break up industrial combinations under the Sherman Antitrust Act. He also set aside 200 million acres for national forests, reserves and wildlife refuges. In the foreign policy arena, he won a Nobel Peace Prize for his negotiations to end the Russo-Japanese War, and sought the start of the construction of the Panama Canal.
