Alice Paul goes to England (1 Jan 1907 Jahr – 31 Dez 1909 Jahr)

Beschreibung:

she went to Birmingham, England in 1907, where she saw Christabel Pankhurst being jeered at as she was forced off the stage after speaking about women’s suffrage. Paul introduced herself to Christabel, who was the most radical English suffragette, Emmeline Pankhurst’s daughter. The Pankhursts and their faction, the WSPU, believed in “deeds, not words” and employed increasingly militant tactics in Britain to protest for suffrage until the outbreak of WW1. The tactics brought them huge amounts of publicity in the newspapers, where there were pictures of them being carried away in handcuffs. (See British timeline for full details of tactics.) Part of the WSPU’s philosophy was also holding the party in power responsible for their plight. Paul joined the movement, personally breaking 48 windows, and getting arrested and imprisoned several times. The imprisoned suffragettes protested for both suffrage and their personal freedom from jail by going on hunger strikes. The jailers would then force feed the women by brutally showing a tube into their nose or mouth and pumping food into them through it. Noticing the impact the Pankhursts and their tactics had on the suffrage debate, she continued to recruit others to join.
