First Seneca Falls Convention (19 Jul 1848 Jahr – 20 Jul 1848 Jahr)

Beschreibung:

On July 19-20, 1848, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Mary McClintock, Jane Hunt, Lucretia Mott and her sister, Martha Coffin Wright, who ran a station on the Underground Railroad, formed the first convention to discuss women’s rights in America: the Women’s Rights Convention, later known as the Seneca Falls Convention. They wrote a paper titled the Declaration of Sentiments. It began with “nineteen ‘abuses and usurpations’ that were destined to destroy a woman’s ‘confidence in her own power, to lessen her self-respect, and to make her willing to lead a dependent and abject life.’” “The declaration called on women to ‘throw off such government.’” After that, eleven resolutions were listed demanding that women be treated equal to men. “The ninth resolution was the most controversial, as it called women ‘to secure to themselves their sacred right to the elective franchise’, or the right to vote.”
