Son of Ernest Augustus, Elector of Brusnwick-Luneburg, and Sophia of Hanover.
Married Sophia Dorothea of Brunswick-Luneberg-Celle on 21 November 1682 and had two children.
Became king because he was the great-grandson of James I, despite hardly speaking any English.
