The most important cash crop for white settlers in Wisconsin was wheat. Wheat was inexpensive and it was fairly easy to grow. This allowed farmers to grow two crops a year. Also this was a good thing for the new immigrants that came to Wisconsin. From 1840 to 1880 Wisconsin was known as “America’s Breadbasket.” This was because one sixth of the nation’s wheat was grown in Wisconsin. All of the early success of farming helped Wisconsin’s agriculture develop faster than any of the other states.
