Lorenzo Ghiberti (1 Jan 1378 Jahr – 1 Jan 1455 Jahr)

Beschreibung:

Lorenzo Ghiberti was born in Pelago, Italy in 1378. Lorenzo was the son of Cione di Ser Buonaccorso Ghiberti and Fiore Ghiberti, however this statement is up for debate. Fiore travelled to Florence to have a common law marriage with a goldsmith named Bartolo De Michele, and he may be Lorenzo’s biological father. Even though there is no record of Cione’s death, Fiore and Bartolo married in 1406. Lorenzo received formal training as a painter and artist in his youth. He also received training as a goldsmith even though he did not continue with goldsmithing throughout his life. He then went to work in the shop of Bartolo De Michele as a young adult. Here, Lorenzo was given a room to paint in, and he loved it. Despite his love of the shop and painting, he asked to leave in 1401. Lorenzo made a multi panel piece called Story of Adam and Eve. He continued making panels of many other religious stories for the church. Lorenzo got into a competition to design doors to be placed on the Baptistry. He won this competition. It took 21 years for the doors to be completed from start to finish, but it was worth it. The doors are cast in bronze with great detail of religious figures on them. In his later life he completed many sculptures and other paintings. He died in 1455.
