World War 2 began on the 1st of September 1939 and ended on the 2nd of September 1945. World War 2 began when Hitler invaded Poland from the west. Two days later other countries, such as France and Britain, declared a war on Germany.

An estimated total of 70-85 million people perished in World War 2. World War 2 resulted in Germany being divided into four parts and the United Nations organisation also forming to maintain safety and security across the globe.

Countries that were involved in World War 2 included Germany, Italy, Japan, France, Great Britain, The United States, the Soviet Union and Australia.

The Second World War was the first time Australians were conscripted to fight overseas. Australia was attacked several times during the Second World War. The Japanese first attack was on the 19th of February 1942 when they launched a fatal air-raid on Darwin. In the weeks after, more Japanese aircrafts attacked cities. The Japanese also sent submarines sneaking up silently in the water causing coastal attacks.
