WWI and The Great Depression (1 Jan 1920 Jahr – 1 Jan 1930 Jahr)

Beschreibung:

1920-1930s: World War 1 halted the flow of new immigrants coming to Strawberry Hill from Europe, and those on the Hill had completely adjusted to life in their adopted homeland. The Great Depression hit Strawberry Hill hard, and there was a long and difficult strike in the meat packing plants in 1921, followed by workforce reduction. The people of the hill were resourceful, and many gathered grain or coal from the railroad yards, and driftwood and ice from the river, to help alleviate needs of their families. Many of the immigrants came from farmlands, and each week, farmers brought their products to city market located on 6th Street between Barnett & Sandusky. Most people living on the Hill had chickens and some hogs. Some of the homes had smokehouses in the rear for curing meats and sausages, wine-making was a universal-practice. Family nutrition far exceeded that which one might expect among wage-earners receiving 20 cents an hour. Source: Strawberry Hill: A Neighborhood Study, Susan Greenbaum 1978
