Saxon Rule (1 Jan 1697 Jahr – 1 Jan 1763 Jahr)

Beschreibung:

Nail in the coffin of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, the Saxon kings were either incompetent, treated the state instrumentally, or had little interest in politics. In most cases, they were installed on the throne as puppets by foreign forces who had increasingly more say in internal affairs of Poland-Lithuania.

Initially, magnates came to them for counsel and mediation, but soon enough foreign armies were used as leverage.

Foreign forces made sure the country remained in state of complete anarchy.

Two magnate families of Czartoryscy (along with Stanisław Poniatowski, the future king; supported by Russia and Austria) and Potoccy, were competing for introducing any reforms at all, but were unable to reach a consensus.

The Saxon Rule severely weakened the position of the Commonwealth in Europe.
