Similar to Bitcoin, Ethereum has a scaling problem with rising smart contract fees that slow down transaction times, especially during ICOs. Plasma is an update which fixes the scaling issues with Ethereum. This is done in collaboration between Vitalik Buterin and Joseph Poon from the Lightning Network.
