Michael Praetorious (1 Jan 1571 Jahr – 1 Jan 1621 Jahr)

a German composer, organist, and music theorist. He was one of the most versatile composers of his age, being particularly significant in the development of musical forms based on Protestant hymns.

The Lutheran chorale concerto was a vocal counterpart to the chorale partita that
mixed instruments with voices. Two proponents were Michael Praetorius and Johann Hermann Schein.

Praetorius also composed pieces for voices and instruments together, as well as
instrumental ensemble music and five treatises.

Note that Michael Praetorious was South German but studied with Sweelinck; this is why he is grouped in the North German School.
