FOREIGN INVOLVEMENT:

ARAB INVOLVEMENT:
-Most Arab states supported Iraq - the Suuni leaders did not like Iran's Shia Islamic revolution. They worried if Iran won, Iraqi Shia Muslims would establish their own Islamic state that was loyal to Khomeini
-Saudi Arabia and other smaller gulf states supplied Iraq with money and arms.
-Jordan gave Iraq a route for imports and exports as the gulf was blocked by Iranian forces.
-However, Syria had a long lasting rivalry with Iraq so supported Iran. They blocked off Iraqi pipes and received Iranian oil.

WESTERN INVOLVEMENT:
-Many Western countries supported Iraq as they opposed the new Islamic regime in Iran.
-France supplied arms.
-The US used satellites to provide Iraq with intelligence and also gave Iraq supplies that were used to make chemical weapons. In May 1984 the US sent warships to make sure that they got oil supplies. The US feared that an Iranian victory would give the Islamic fundamentalists control of world oil prices.
-The USSR wanted to stop Iraq forming friendships with the West and stop the Iranian revolution from getting near the USSR border.
