Asked the pope to cancel his marriage with Catherine of Aragon, whom he blamed for not being able to provide him a healthy male heir. However, in accordance with Catholic marital law, the request was rejected.

In response, Henry announced himself the head of Church in England and married his lover Anne Boleyn. The announcement was enforced in 1534 by the issuing of a supremacy act, giving rise to the new Anglican Church. The opponents were repressed.

Henry continued the policies of his father Henry VII, gradually turning Englang into an absolute monarchy.
