The Great Chinese Famine (1 Jul 1958 Jahr – 1 Jul 1961 Jahr)

- Widespread and severe famine over all China

- Estimated deaths around 20-30 million (that aint too much, is it?)

- Was not recognised by the CCP or propaganda

Cause:
- Caused by the disruption of collectivisation

- The fraudulent findings of Lysenkoism were followed and did not increase crop yield

- The "Smash Sparrows Campaign", or "Sparrowcide" (part of the Four Pests Campaign in order to reduce pests which reduced crop yield or were annoying), had the effect of unbalancing the ecosystem and decreasing crop yield

- Cases of prostitution, child and wife sale, and cannibalism were present

Blame:
- When it was recognised, blamed on grain hoarding by peasants, bad weather, and mistakes by officials (all hold some truth)

End:
- Liu Shaoqi and Deng Xiaoping put in charge of managing the famine

- Allowed private farming to provide peasants with incentive to produce
