English Civil WAR (19 Dez 1642 Jahr – 17 März 1651 Jahr)

Parliament was victorious in the first phase of the civil war. Parliament's success came from its creation of a "New Model Army" which consisted of Puritans known as Independents. They were extreme. Led by Oliver Cromwell, the New Model Army captured Charles I. The Presbyterians wanted to disband the army and restore Charles I with a Presbyterian state, but there were more radicals who did not want a Presbyterian church, marched on London and negotiated with the king. He fleed to seek help from the Scots.

The king's fleeing enraged Cromwell, and a second civil war began. Cromwell's army won, and they captured the king. He was beheaded and the revolution had triumphed. The Presbyterian members of Parliament were purged, and a rump Parliament was created. There were 53 members in the House of Commons. (See Oliver Cromwell for the new government)
