The Vietnam war started as an anticolonial war against French. Later it evolved into a Cold War conflict, where on one side was a communist North Vietnam supported by Soviet Union and China, and on the other side was non-communist South Vietnam supported by the U.S. It escalated into the largest U.S. involvement since the World War 2.
