German Appeasement.... ending with the Invasion of Poland (30 Sept 1938 Jahr – 1 Sept 1939 Jahr)
Beschreibung:
In the late 1930’s, France and Britain adopted a policy of appeasement. The objective of this policy was to maintain peace and avoid war in Europe by giving in to Germany’s demands. Hitler ordered Czechoslovakia to give Germany Sudetenland (the German speaking part of Czechoslovakia), and Britain and France agreed without discussing with Czechoslovakia. In March 1939, Hitler gained control over the rest of Czechoslovakia, despite promising that he would no longer demand land in Europe. Britain and France agreed to this, still hoping to avoid any conflict. However, Britain and France underestimated Hitler’s need for world power and after years of German Appeasement, the strong German army invaded Poland.
Causes
1. German Appeasement began because Britain and France feared the power of Germany and did not want to go to war with them. The British people wanted peace and would not have supported another war. The British army was also very weak from the First World War and did not think that they could have survived a second.
2. Many people also gave into Hitler’s demands because most of them seemed reasonable at the time. He complained a lot about the unfairness of the Treaty of Versailles and people started to feel guilty.
Effects
1. Germany claimed that their invasion of Poland was a defensive measure, Britain and France were not convinced. Two days after the invasion, Britain and France declared war on Germany, initiating World War II
2. By giving in to Germany’s demands, Britain and France essentially let Germany build a very large and powerful, war-ready country. They allowed Germany to gain power, in hopes of avoiding the inevitable war, but instead they had to face the extremely dangerous enemy that they had created.
