The Rape of Nanking was a brutal attack on the city of Nanking in China by the Japanese Imperial Army. They murdered hundreds of thousands of soldiers and civilians in the Chinese city while also sexually assaulting between 20,000 and 80,000 women; hence the name, Rape of Nanking. The city was left in ruins and would take decades for the city and its citizens to restore what had been damaged. As most of the Japanese military records about the killings were kept hidden and were ruined after their surrender it was very difficult to accurately find out the death toll but the International Military Tribunal for the Far East in Tokyo had an estimate that around 200,000 Chinese people were killed during the Rape of Nanking.
