Romance was an art, literature and intellectual movement that originated in Europe towards the end of the 18th century and was at its peak for some time from 1800 to 1850. Romance is characterized by its designation of emotions and individualism and of everything past, and prefers the Middle Ages rather than the classical ones. It is a reaction to the ideas of the industrial revolution, the noblemen and the political norms of the age of enlightenment and the scientific reason of nature.

The romance turned to enlightenment's belief in reason, and instead it was the emotion and imagination that put the focus. Interest in the magic, horror and love grew, which many new genres emerged during this era.
