The thrust ssc has the current land speed record now (Jan 2020). It was driven by British driver Andy Green and made by British engineers. It was the first time a land vehicle has broken the sound barrier. The strategic mounting and positioning of the engines, placement of the tires, management of safety and control of lift force were just some of the team's mechanical and aerodynamic solutions to problems that would have prevented Royal Air Force pilot Andy Green from achieving his record-setting run.
Other examples of innovations that had to be created include: A 155 mph fire engine, a 6 tonne forklift, a parachute that can deploy at 600 mph and even rear wheel steering.
