The Reconstruction Era was the time when the South had to restructure its entire economy due to the abolition of slavery. However, systems like the Black Codes were established so African Americans were still dependent on the Whites in the South in a system very close to slavery. This oppression lasted years after Reconstruction and some of its remnants is still present in today's society.
