Ghiberti wins the right to sculpt a set of bronze doors for the Florentine Baptistry. The construction takes 28 years and the doors are now one of the most treasured Renaissance artifacts. These doors are the first widely recognized "Renaissance style" works and kicked off the construction of more and more works using this style (e.g. the Cathedral of Florence's dome).
