The Whig Party formed as a response to Jacksonian Democracy. In 1836 the Whig Party was thrust into the spotlight of national politics after running 4 candidates for president and nearly forcing a contested election. In 1840 William Henry Harrison won the Presidential Election ushering in an age of Whig National prominence. Despite this victory, the Whigs struggled to find a solid role in American Politics and by the end of the 1840s adopted a very vague position as the party lacked a strong cohesive policy. Eventually, the Whig party would tear itself apart over the issue of slavery. Some Whig party members carrying more for national unity then abolishing slavery while some Whig party members felt that slavery was opposed to their free-market principles. This issue would effectivly end the Whig party.
