personal income rising from less than $350 in
1940 to more than $1,000 by 1950, surpassing
the national average. After the war the state
continued to prosper, with Atlanta in particular
experiencing a growth in industry and
population.
A transportation hub since its origins as a
railroad town, the city was well positioned to
accommodate this growth with the
development of Hartsfield Airport from a
