Count Raymond VI of Toulouse (1 Jan 1156 Jahr – 1 Jan 1222 Jahr)
Beschreibung:
Growth of Heresy in Languedoc occurred because the region was politically fractured and the bishops, abbots, and lords of the region resented interference from Rome.
Innocent III sent legates to try and convert the heretics. Raymond VI refused to cooperate and was excommunicated in 1207.
After an argument between him and a papal legate, the legate was assassinated and he was blamed. He was excommunicated and publicly flogged.
To re-establish himself he joined the Albigensian Crusade against his own lands. While there he also managed to steer the crusade away from looting his lands.
