Went to Venice to get boats to sail to Jerusalem. The Doge of Venice agreed for a price. Crusaders' overestimated turnout and were unable to pay the Doge. Doge told them they could repay by helping him retake Zara, a city that had rebelled against his rule.

After taking Zara, the Crusaders met the Prince of Byzantine, Alexios IV. His uncle Alexios III dethroned Isaac II, Alexios IV's father. Alexios IV wanted to reclaim his empire. Promised to pay the Crusaders a ton if they helped retake Constantinople.
Went there, successfully removed his Uncle from the throne. After Alexios IV became emp with his father, he began plundering Constantinople because he couldn't afford the promised payment. His lieutenant dethroned him and named himself Alexios V. The Crusaders saw him as an enemy and sacked Constantinople, whos people they viewed as accomplices to the murder of Alexios IV.
