Freedom Summer was a voter registration drive run by organizations such as SNCC and CORE who helped to increase black voter registration numbers in Mississippi. Along with SNCC and CORE, other large organizations like COFO also helped to boost registration numbers. Due to its historically low black voter turnout numbers, Mississippi was chosen to be the site for Freedom Summer. Because of the efficacy of Freedom Summer in the Civil Rights movement, it decreased isolation and repression that existed under Jim Crow. It did not, however, significantly raise the number of registered black voters.
