His parents were Joanna of Philip I of Castile. He was married to Isabella of Portugal, which was purely political marriage lasting 13 years. He had four children in this marriage: first-born son Philip II (1527–1598), Maria (1528–1603), Ferdinand, who died in infancy, finally Joan (1535–1573). Before and after his marriage Charles had a number of unofficial relationships that resulted in illegitimate offspring. When he was elected the Holy Roman Emporer he then owned almost all of Western Europe. He spent most of his life defending the integrity of the Holy Roman Empire from the Protestant Reformation
