Designed by a prisoner in a concentration camp. The Curta was the first and only portable mechanical calculator. The Curta's design is a descendant of Gottfried Leibniz's Stepped Reckoner and Charles Thomas's Arithmometer.

The Curta was introduced in 1947, the last models were produced in 1970. The Curta works according to the same principles as the mechanical desktop calculators, but its mechanism is much more compact
