6 October: Funeral of Laszlo Rajik
23 October: Students in Budapest demand an end to Soviet occupation and the implementation fo "true socialism".
23 October: Police arrest protesters. When other students attempted to aid those who were arrested the police opened fire on the crowd.
23 October: Protesters topple a 30ft statue of Stalin as a symbolic gesture.
24 October: Russian troops had been sent to stop the protests overnight.
24 October: Soviet tanks were stationed outside the Parliament building.
24 October: Soviet soldiers guarded key bridges and crossroads.
24: October: despite the USSR's reaction Hungarian soldiers + workers joined students in protest.
24 October: The Hungarian Communist Party appoints a new Prime Minister - Imre Nagy.
24 October: Imre Nagy makes a request + a promise - he asks Khruschev to remove Russian troops in Hungary + promised free elections to the people.
25 October: A large number of protesters gathered in front of the Parliament building.
25 October: Protesters take control of the running fo the country.
25 October: Politicians loyal to Russia are forced to flee.
25 October: Nagy is allowed to continue as Prime Minister and keeps promising reforms.
28 October: Khrushchev agrees to Nagy's request - the Russian army withdraws from Budapest.
4 November: 1,000 Russian tanks moved into Budapest.
4 November: Hungary's airfields + highway junctions + bridges are all captured by the Red army.
4 November: After fierce fighting the Russians gain control.
4 November: There is a new Hungarian leader - Janos Kadar. He says he will let Nagy + his followers leave the country safely.
22 November: Nagy is kidnapped + tried for treason. He is eventually executed in June 1958 in secret.

1 November: Nagy appeals to the UN for help in resolving conflict.
Political prisoners (ie. Cardinal Joseph Mindszenty) are released.
Nagy introduced freedom of speech + freedom of religion + democracy.
29 October - 3 November: reforms introduced.
Nagy also announces that Hungary was going to leave the Warsaw Pact.
