1357: Chaucer is believed to have begun his education as a page in the household of Elizabeth, Countess of Ulster.
1359: Chaucer joins the English army and is captured during the Hundred Years' War. He is eventually ransomed and released.
1366: Chaucer marries Philippa Roet, a lady-in-waiting to Queen Philippa. They go on to have four children.
1367: Chaucer becomes a member of the royal court as a valet to King Edward III.
1370: Chaucer travels to Italy on a diplomatic mission.
1374: Chaucer is appointed Controller of Customs and Subsidy of Wools, Skins, and Tanned Hides in the Port of London, a position he holds until 1386.
1382: Chaucer becomes Comptroller of the Petty Customs, a position he holds until 1386.
1386: Chaucer is elected to Parliament as a member for Kent.
1389: Chaucer is appointed Clerk of the King's Works, responsible for overseeing construction projects such as the Palace of Westminster and the Tower of London.
1390: Chaucer begins work on his most famous work, The Canterbury Tales.
1399: Chaucer's friend and patron, King Richard II, is deposed by Henry IV. Chaucer loses his position as Clerk of the King's Works.
1400: Chaucer dies in London. He is buried in Westminster Abbey.
