Martin Luther King Jr., an important and prominent leader in the Civil Rights Movement, is assassinated.
Freedom rides were organised in the South, organised by CORE and the SNCC. Bus restroom facilities was desegregated in 1961, and it was a test to see if the states was to enforce the legislation. Buses were attacked and firebombed, and black and white protesters were beaten up at bus stops. It, again, sent a message of the shocking violence against black civil rights.
African Americans are incarcerated at more than 5 times the rate of whites. The imprisonment rate for African American women is twice that of white women. Nationwide, African American children represent 32% of children who are arrested, 42% of children who are detained, and 52% of children whose cases are judicially waived to criminal court.
