1919 - Amir Amanullah Khan becomes Afghan ruler.
1921 - Queen Soraya promotes women in schools and the workforce. Family Code Law written.
1923 - Afghan Constitution Written.
1924 - Women get to choose their husbands.
1929 - Mohammed Nadir Shah comes into power.
1933 - Nadir Shah assassinated. Zahir Shah comes into power.
1959 - Royal Family Women appeared unveiled.
1964 - People's Democratic Party of Afghanistan established and new constitution written.
1973 - Mohammed Daoud Khan siezes power.
1977 - Jirga approves constitution that establishes presidential one party system of government.
1978 -PDPA takes over government. PDPA Assassinates Mohammed Dauod. Tribal leaders begin armed revolt. Nur Mohammad Taraki becomes president, prime minister, and general secretary. Country renamed the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan. Decree requires education for girls and raises the legal age for marriage to 16.
1979 - Taraki and PDPA leader struggle for power as revolts continue. Soviet Union offers military aid and personnel. Women encouraged to further education and to take jobs. Soviet Union topples Afghan Governement.
1981 - Afghanistan becomes Cold War pawn. CIA pours money and weaponry into rural Afghanistan.
1983 - Insurrection against Soviet Union attracts young Muslim idealists from Arab world to Afghanistan including Osama bin Laden and Ayman al Zawahiri.
1988 - Soviet forces withdraw. Afghanistan falls into civil war between tribes and mujahideen.
1996 - Taliban comes to power. They institute a severe version of Shariah Law, requiring men to grow beards and women to fully veil themselves. Those who disobey are punished.
