Slaves began to rebel after they were inspired by the ideas of equality in the French Revolution. Slaves were led by former slave Toussaint l'Overture.
By 1792, the slaves controlled a third of the island of Saint Domingue.
In 1793, British forces arrived, and allied with the Spanish to put an end to the slave rebellions.
British forces leave after being defeated by Toussaint's army.
Toussaint and slaves extended into the Spanish colony Santo Domingo, and slavery was abolished, after becoming governor general of Sainte Domingue.
Napolean sent his brother-in-law, Charles Leclerc, and 43,000 troops to Saint Domingue to capture Toussaint.
Toussaint died in prison in 1803.
On November 18, 1803 the French were defeated at the Battle of Vertieres. It was led by Jean-Jacques Dessalines.
The island was officially named Haiti and declared an independent nation by Dessalines on Jan 1, 1804.
Toussaint made peace with France after they abolished slavery in 1794.
Slaves marched through the colony and set plantations to flames and captured landowners.
