1945 Japan's colonial rule over Korea ends with it's WWII surrender. Soviet troops occupy the north, and U.S. troops occupy the south.
1948 Korea is divided between the Soviet- backed North and the U.S.-backed South. Shortly after the division The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (D.P.R.K) forms, after this the Soviet troops withdraw.
1950 The South declares independence, this sparks the Korean War.
1953 A truce between North & South Korea effectively 'ends' The Korean War.
1994 Kim Il-sung passes away, he is succeeded by his son Kim Jong-il
1985 North Korea joins the international Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. (N.N.P.T.) This bars the country from producing nuclear weapons.
1998 North Korea fires its first long-range missile
2002 The U.S., Japan, and South Korea stop oil shipments following the discovery North Korea had secretly been developing a uranium-based nuclear programme.
2003 North Korea withdraws from the N.N.P.T.
2011 Kim Jong-il passes away. Kim Jong-un takes over by Apri lof the same year
January, 2017 Kim Jong-un says North Korea is in the final stages of developing long-range guided missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads.
July, 2017 - Pyongyang test fires a long- range missile. Some experts speculate that the missile could potentially reach Alaska.
August, 2017 Tension rises as North Korean threatens to fire ballistic missiles near Guam.
