Enron started as a small natural gas transmission service. When the government banned the transmission of this gas, the owners found a workaround. But with the ban came a dramatic decrease in profits. They used a technique “mark to market accounting," starting a huge fraud that stole nearly 74 billion from the company's shareholders.
