3-D printing OSV Wheels: Along with building the original OSV, we started 3-D printing the wheels for locomotion and navigation. At the time, we didn't think about the size and the surface area of the wheels. Due to that, we struggled with our OSV moving due to the weight distribution on the OSV.
Burning Arduinos: Throughout the process, we have burned three Arduino Unos. This was a problem for us because we didn't know how to protect our Arduinos from frying. This was a lesson for the whole team because we learned to implement insulation for not just our Arduinos alone, but other components as well.
Weight Distribution: This is when we notice a huge problem on the OSV. When we added all the components on the OSV, it would not move across the sand. We as a team tried to move the components on different parts of the OSV, but nothing seemed to work. That's when we focused on the motors.
Motor Replacement: We eventually found out that the motors we initially used for the project were not effective. We bought new motors to fix that problem and it did help the OSV move across the sand. We didn't account for the rocky terrain.
Cardboard Wheels: We eventually added cardboard to our wheels. This was a step further into completing our mission and this was a lesson for us. This helped us understand that the wheels needed to have more surface area and width. This was needed to help go over the sand a lot better.
New Wheels and Axle: Now knowing about the effects of the surface area and the width of the wheels, we bought larger ones. This helped us build teamwork by establishing our weaknesses with our OSV and investing time to fix the problem.
Assembling the initial OSV design: DataBeGreat started to assemble their prototype OSV on the plywood chassis. This was one of our biggest milestones because it displayed us strategizing our component layout on a kit before we started assembling. This builds great teamwork because it helps our team plan before executing decisions as well as providing each member's background knowledge towards the final project.
