Hans and Zacharias Janssen were a father and son duo that created what is known as the first microscope in 1590.
Robert Hooke was the first scientist to discover the microscope in 1665. He discovered the cell by using a microscope.
In 1674, Anton van Leeuwenhoek first discovered the existence of single celled organisms by looking into pond water through a microscope
Botanist Robert Brown discovered the concept that plant cells contain a nucleus. He discovered this in 1833.
In 1838, Matthias Schleiden concluded that cells make up plant tissue and are the basic building block of all plant matter. Schleiden is one of the co-founders of the cell theory.
Theodor Schwann looked at the ideas created by Matthias Schleiden, and was able to conclude a theory that all tissues, both plant and animal, were made up of cells. Schwann was one of the co-founders of the cell theory.
In 1855, Rudolph Virchow came up with the theory that the origin of cells came from the division of pre-existing cells.
Albert von Kölliker was the first scientist to describe the mitochondria in 1857.
In 1840, Albrecht von Roelliker concluded that sperm and egg were also cells.
Germ cells are haploid, chromosome theory of heredity. This was determined in 1883.
