In about 1495 Leonardo da Vinci sketched the first plans for a humanoid robot.In 1739 Jacques de Vaucanson made a famous mechanical duck that could crane its neck, flap its wings, swallow food, and even poop.Canard Digerateur, or Digesting Duck. (See 1739 entry)Henry Ford installed the world's first moving conveyor belt assembly line in his car factory. The robot assembled things much faster than before.The first true robot toy was produced in Japan. It was called the "Lilliput". It was a wind-up toy that walked. It was made from tinplate and stood just 15cm tall.George Devol and Joe Engleberger designed the first programmable robot arm. This later became the first industrial robot, completing dangerous and repetitive tasks on an assembly line at General Motors (1962).The Soviet Union launched ‘Sputnik’, the first artificial orbiting satellite. This marked the beginning of the space race.The first computer to be mass produced is the IBM 360.Honda starts a new project to create a walking humanoid robot.Honda debuts ASIMO. (See 1986 entry)Roomba robotic vacuum cleaner created. Now we can use robots in the household!Isaac Asimov created Three Laws of Robotics:
1. A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
2. A robot must obey any orders given to it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.Karel Capek coined the term "robot".The first Robocup tournament is held in Japan.

(We have more advanced versions now.)Epsom created the smallest known robot ever to be created. It is 7cm high and weighs 10 grams. It's supposed to be a robotic helicopter "flying camera" for natural disasters.Alan Turing starts the computer revolution by making a paper called "On Computable Numbers".An IBM-built-computer named Deep Blue beat world champion Garry Kasparov at chess.LEGO launches its first Robotics Inventions System.An eight-legged walking robot from Carnegie University called Dante II, successfully goes into Mount Spur to collect volcanic gas samples.Researchers at Cornell University built the first self-replicating robot, that links itself together with magnets.
