Thomas begins writing his book.Thomas and Margot meet Eliza and he develops feelings.Thomas' family attends church and he messes up whilst singing.When his family gets home, Thomas gets punished for his mistake and his mother gets slapped by his father.Mrs van Amersfoort puts a "spell" on the Bumbiter and Thomas becomes friends with her and she gives him a book called "Emil and the Detectives".Thomas begins writing a love letter for Eliza.During dinner, a letter arrives from Mrs van Amersfoort saying that slapping a woman is shameful and Thomas tries to hide it from his father.Eliza receives Thomas' letter and gives him a kiss on the cheek.Getting an idea from the passage his father read, Thomas pours Mrs van Amersfoort's red cordial into the fishbowl.
